Police Officer
POSITION SCOPE
Under supervision, performs general duty police work for the protection of life and property, prevention of crime, apprehension of criminals, the general enforcement of laws & ordinances, and works with the community to reduce and/or eliminate problems. This position is responsible for routine patrol, response to calls for service, preliminary investigations, traffic regulation duties, and problem-solving. Utilizing a thorough working knowledge of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances, the police officer is responsible for the enforcement of such laws on a fair and impartial basis in the protection of life and property and in maintaining the peace and orderly conduct of the community. Salary Range $65,414.99 - $81,203.58 - dependent upon years of service (lateral hires may start at a higher step within the pay scale) Additional shift differential, educational incentive, holiday, and other pays available.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
POLICE OFFICERS ASSIGNED AS PATROL OFFICERS ARE INVOLVED IN THE FOLLOWING ACTIVITIES:
• Patrols a designated area of the City on an assigned shift to discover and prevent the commission of crime and to enforce motor vehicle operations and parking regulations.
• Answers calls for service such as disturbances, vehicle crashes, robberies, domestic situations, etc.
• Engages the community in their assigned area in problem solving.
• Trained as a First Responder for medical emergencies.
• Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses
and may make arrests and escort prisoners from the scene of a crime.
• Obtains information through interviews, interrogation, and observation.
• Interviews persons with complaints or inquiries and attempts to assist them appropriately or directs them to proper authorities.
• Prepares evidence for issuance of complaints, serves criminal processes, including
warrants and subpoenas, and makes reports of all activities.
• Must be able to give credible testimony in court.
• Compiles clear and concise reports.
• Proficient in the skills required to be a police officer, which include use of force, firearms, emergency vehicle operation, and professional communication.
• Represents the Police Department and City in the community.
• Takes part in training and education opportunities to continue improving in the police profession.
• Performs any other duties as directed by a Department supervisor.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/CERTIFICATIONS
Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.)

Possess a minimum of 60 post high school semester credits OR must have three (3) years full-time employment or military experience and obtain 60 post high school semester credits within five (5) years of appointment

Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Be a U.S. Citizen

Be at least 18 years old

Have no felony convictions on record
In addition, applicants must successfully pass each of the following components: written entrance examination, physical agility test, oral interview, and background investigation. Before employment, candidates may be asked to participate in further testing at City expense, which may include physical/medical evaluation, personality testing, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and/or chemical substance testing.

Not law enforcement certified? No problem - if hired, we will sponsor your attendance to the Law Enforcement Academy through CVTC. During this time, you will be paid at the cadet rate of pay ($26.20/hour).
